Program Overview

This program is a first-ever one-of-a-kind exchange program developed by partner companies, LbE Japan and LbE Hawaii. LbE Hawaii will host high school students with Japan and give them the opportunity to exchange language, culture, and discussions with Kalani High School students. Similar to LbE Hawaii's standard programs, this program will break up the visiting students into small groups of 4~5 and will pair them up to 1 Kalani student and 1 LbE Hawaii Islander. Islanders will be responsible for escorting, mentoring, and assisting in clarifying important information or developing presentations.

Program Theme

The school that is coming to Hawaii is a specialized school that has a special focus on Science and Engineering. The program theme topic of "Sustainability / Renewal Energy" has been chosen. LbE will develop a curriculum and program designed to cover this topic, while making it relevant to HAWAII - making their learning interdisciplinary. Site visits and activities will not only be Science-related, but also relating to Hawaii's culture, history, diversity, Japan-Hawaii relations, and nature and environment.

Islander Duties

  • Escort Japanese and Kalani High School students (group of 5~6) throughout program (assigned to 1 group for whole program)
  • Assist the group with communication, discussion, and critical thinking during program activities
  • Create a HALE ALOHA presentation - cultural presentation representing your background. More info here.
  • Responsible for the safe transportation of group on the city bus
  • Supervise or cook for students at the Waikiki Banyan hotel (kitchen installed in every hotel room)
  • Keep track of you and your students' expenses for lunch and dinner (cash to be provided and managed by Islanders)

Islander Qualifications

  • Be available for all or any dates and times listed below to participate in this program
  • Strong English-Speaking skills (slow pronunciation, loud voice, easy vocabulary)
  • Desired qualification - interest in sustainability or renewable energy (no background necessary)
  • Desired qualification - fun, outgoing, approachable personality
  • Desired qualification - experience from other LbE Hawaii programs, but not required

Language During Program

As a contrast to other LbE Hawaii programs, we will allow Islanders to practice their Japanese skills with their students throughout the program. LbE Hawaii would like to give the Kalani High School students (who are all studying Japanese) a chance to practice immersing themselves into the Japanese language. The Japanese high school students must also practice their English while in Hawaii. This will be a 2-way language exchange opportunity.
